NARRATIVE SUMMARY
HMM-364 conducted the first month of exclusive CH-46D
operations in the Republic of Vietnam. These operations ranged from
the ROK area near Chu Lai, in the southerly extreme of I Corps, along the
coastal plains northward to the DMZ, a distance of approximately 170 miles.
The squadron participated in Operations Oceola, Kentucky, Citrus and Auburn,
while supporting the 1stMarDiv, 3rdMarDiv, III MAF, and the ROK Marines.
Typical examples of tasks assigned included personnel and cargo lifts,
both tactical and administrative; reconnaissance; team inserts and extractions;
medical evacuations; and stand-by alert duties. The main hindrance
to operations was several extended periods of inclement weather that reduced
the number of missions normally completed.
1 Dec 67: No flight operations were conducted this date. 2 Dec 67: Flight operations were canceled due to adverse weather. 3 Dec 67: HMM-364 flew 30 sorties, accumulating 24.2 flight hours, carrying 20 troops and 13.9 tons of cargo in support of 3rdMarDiv. Operations were somewhat curtailed by weather, but during the period 0615H to 1845H, one CH-46D from HMM-364 flew 10 sorties, 3.7 flight hours, carried 3 troops and 7.4 tons of cargo. 4 Dec 67: HMM-364 flew 120 sorties, 65.4 flight hours, carrying 645 troops and 2.7 tons of cargo. In support of Lamson 152, HMM-364 aircraft flew 74 sorties, 16.5 flight hours, carrying 585 troops, inserting one recon team at YD572161 on mission 73, with six aircraft. Two squadron aircraft flew 10 sorties, 2.6 flight hours, carried 19 troops, and inserted two recon teams on mission 66A-C. 142 sorties, 53.4 flight hours, lifting 400 troops and 18.9 tons of cargo
in support of the 1st and 3rd Marine Divisions and MAG-16. During
the period 1746H to 0855H, on mission 63A, four CH-46D aircraft from HMM-364
flew 8 sorties, 5.8 flight hours, carrying four troops/
6 Dec 67: HMM-364 flew 139 sorties, 55.2 flight hours carrying 163 troops/passen- gers and 14.0 tons of cargo in support of III MAF, 1st and 3rd Marine Divisions, and MAG-16. Ten emergency and two priority medevac missions were flow. On mission 63, two CH-46D aircraft from this squadron flew 2 sorties, covering 3.7 flight hours, carrying 8 troops/passengers in support of Sparrow Hawk Operations, including an emergency extraction where enemy fire was received with no hits. On mission 67, two squadron aircraft flew 17 sorties, 6.4 flight hours, carrying 31 troops and 9.0 tons of cargo. Two priority medevacs were made in support of 1stMarDiv and enemy fire was reported but no hits taken. 7 Dec 67: HMM-364 aircraft flew 35 sorties,

On this date, mission 71, composed of six aircraft flew 32 sorties, 11.1 flight hours, carrying 278 troops/passemgers in support of Operation Lamson 159. Mission 75/76, consisting of two aircraft flew 20 sorties, 6.1 flight hours, carrying 112 troops/passengers and 1.0 ton of cargo in support of Operation Citrus. Enemy fire was received with no hits reported and no fire returned. In support of III MAF and the ROK Marine Corps, four aircraft flew 87 sorties, 21.2 flight hours, carrying 318 troops/passengers and 5.3 tons of cargo. 18 Dec 67: HMM-364 flew 80 sorties, 27.4

19 Dec 67: This squadron flew 99 sorties, 65.0 flight hours, carrying 277 troops/ passengers and 33.6 tons of cargo in support of III MAF, 3rdMarDiv. Missions 63, 69 and 70D, E, F and G, consisting of two squadron aircraft flew 33 sorties, 11.4 flight hours, carrying 101 troops/passengers and 14.0 tons of cargo. Three recon insertions were made by these aircraft, and two extractions, with no enemy fire being recorded. In addition, one CH-46D from HMM-364 flew 19 sorties, 4.4 flight hours, carrying 28 troops/passengers and 8.3 tons of cargo. Mission 64/72, composed of two squadron aircraft, flew 32 sorties, 9.6 flight hours, carrying 124 passengers/troops and 8.6 tons of cargo, making one recon insertion and one extraction. 21 Dec 67: Squadron aircraft flew 65 sorties, 30.5 flight hours, carrying 150 troops and 3.8 tons of cargo. One medevac mission carried one routine evacuee in support of II MAF and 3rdMarDiv. On mission 63C, two aircraft flew 14 sorties, 3.4 flight hours, carrying 25 troops/passengers and made four recon overflies of the following areas: YD7409, YD7709, YD8301 and YD7014. Upon completion of the recon overflies, four sorties were flown for gunner training, utilizing 600 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition. On mission 68B, two aircraft flew 10 sorties, 3.5 flight hours, carrying 32 troops and .3 tons of cargo. One medevac mission carried one routine evacuee. In support of III MAF, HMM-364 flew 7 sorties, 3.8 flight hours, carrying 27 troops, 1.7 tons of cargo. Three recon extractions and one insertion were made in support of 3rdMarDiv. During the period 210001H to 302400H four aircraft, operating from Marble Mountain Air Facility, in support of 1stMarDiv, III MAF, United States Air Force, the ROK Marine Corps and Operation AUBURN flew 345 sorties, 77.9 flight hours, carrying 1,499 troops, 19.3 tons of cargo. Three medevac missions carried 17 emergency evacuees and two Viet Cong prisoners. |
