NARRATIVE SUMMARY


HMM-364 conducted the first month of exclusive CH-46D operations in the Republic of Vietnam.  These operations ranged from the ROK area near Chu Lai, in the southerly extreme of I Corps, along the coastal plains northward to the DMZ, a distance of approximately 170 miles.  The squadron participated in Operations Oceola, Kentucky, Citrus and Auburn, while supporting the 1stMarDiv, 3rdMarDiv, III MAF, and the ROK Marines.  Typical examples of tasks assigned included personnel and cargo lifts, both tactical and administrative; reconnaissance; team inserts and extractions; medical evacuations; and stand-by alert duties.  The main hindrance to operations was several extended periods of inclement weather that reduced the number of missions normally completed.

1 Dec 67:  No flight operations were conducted this date.

2 Dec 67:  Flight operations were canceled due to adverse weather.

3 Dec 67:  HMM-364 flew 30 sorties, accumulating 24.2 flight hours, carrying 20 troops and 13.9 tons of cargo in support of 3rdMarDiv.  Operations were somewhat curtailed by weather, but during the period 0615H to 1845H, one CH-46D from HMM-364 flew 10 sorties, 3.7 flight hours, carried 3 troops and 7.4 tons of cargo.

4 Dec 67:  HMM-364 flew 120 sorties, 65.4 flight hours, carrying 645 troops and 2.7 tons of cargo.  In support of Lamson 152, HMM-364 aircraft flew 74 sorties, 16.5 flight hours, carrying 585 troops, inserting one recon team at YD572161 on mission 73, with six aircraft.  Two squadron aircraft flew 10 sorties, 2.6 flight hours, carried 19 troops, and inserted two recon teams on mission 66A-C.  Three recon insertions were fragged and three were flown.

5 Dec 67:   Squadron aircraft flew 142 sorties, 53.4 flight hours, lifting 400 troops and 18.9 tons of cargo in support of the 1st and 3rd Marine Divisions and MAG-16.  During the period 1746H to 0855H, on mission 63A, four CH-46D aircraft from HMM-364 flew 8 sorties, 5.8 flight hours, carrying four troops/
passengers and 2.4 tons of cargo, receiving enemy fire, with one round entering the midsection of the fuselage.  No injuries were sustained.

6 Dec 67:  HMM-364 flew 139 sorties, 55.2 flight hours carrying 163 troops/passen- gers and 14.0 tons of cargo in support of III MAF, 1st and 3rd Marine Divisions, and MAG-16.  Ten emergency and two priority medevac missions were flow. On mission 63, two CH-46D aircraft from this squadron flew 2 sorties, covering 3.7 flight hours, carrying 8 troops/passengers in support of Sparrow Hawk Operations, including an emergency extraction where enemy fire was received with no hits.  On mission 67, two squadron aircraft flew 17 sorties, 6.4 flight hours, carrying 31 troops and 9.0 tons of cargo.  Two priority medevacs were made in support of 1stMarDiv and enemy fire was reported but no hits taken. 

7 Dec 67:  HMM-364 aircraft flew 35 sorties, 18.2 flight hours, carrying 76 troops/
passengers, 1.2 tons of cargo in support of 1st and 3rd Marine Divisions, III MAF, and MAG-16.  On mission 63A, two aircraft flew 2 sorties, covering 1.4 flight hours, carrying two troops/passengers, in support of Bald Eagle Operations.  Enemy fire was received, resulting in YK-24 receiving one .30 caliber hit.  Four medevac missions carried 32 routine evacuees in support of 1stMarDiv and MAG-16.

8 Dec 67:  The squadron flew 56 sorties. 29.0 flight hours, carrying 56 troops/
passengers and 9.9 tons of cargo in support of III MAF, 1st and 3rd Marine Divisions and MAG-16.

9 Dec 67:  HMM-364 flew 125 sorties, 32.1 flight hours, carrying 635 troops/passengers.  The squadron completed 55 tasks while carrying 413 troops/
passengers and 43.5 tons of cargo in support of III MAF, 1st and 3rd Marine Divisions, and MAG-16. On mission 71, five aircraft flew 60 sorties, 12.2 flight hours and carried 543 troops/passengers in support of Operation Oceola.  No enemy fire was encountered.

10 Dec 67:  HMM-364 flew 63 sorties, 13.5 flight hours, carrying 40 troops/passengers, and 2.5 tons of cargo, with 52.0 hours of standby operation in support of 3rdMarDiv.  Six medevac missions carried nine priority and one routine evacuees in support of III MAF, 1stMarDiv and MAG-16.

11 Dec 67:  HMM-364 flew 54 sorties, 16.3 flight hours carrying 107 troops/
passengers and 13.5 tons of cargo, with 28.0 hours of operational standby in support of III MAF, 1st and 3rd Marine Divisions, and MAG-16.  Mission 26, consisting of two aircraft flew 24 sorties, 4.2 flight hours, carrying 31 troops and 7.0 tons of cargo in support of Operation Pitt.  Mission 24 and 54A composed of one CH-46D flew 12 sorties, 3.5 flight hours, carrying 27 troops/passengers, making two recon insertions.  Three recon extractions were also made with no enemy fire reported.  The squadron also stood 140.0 hours of operational standby during the period 101800H and 120700H in support of Bald Eagle and Operation Oceola.

12 Dec 67:  HMM-364 flew 118 sorties, 27.6 flight hours, carrying 583 troops/
passengers and 16.0 tons of cargo in support of 1stMarDiv.  One medevac mission carried 29 routine evacuees in support of Operation Kentucky with air bursts resulting in minor damage to YK-14.  On mission 71C, two aircraft flew 26 sorties, 6.5 flight hours, carrying 50 troops and 14.7 tons of cargo.  On mission 74A, four aircraft flew 73 sorties, 14.0 flight hours, carrying 531 troops/passengers and 2.5 tons of cargo ion support of Operation Oceola. 

13 Dec 67:  HMM-364 flew 27 sorties, 8.5 flight hours, carrying 36 troops/ passengers and 14.0 tons of cargo in support of 1stMarDiv.  Two aircraft RON at Quang Tri in support of Operation Oceola.  Squadron flight operations were curtailed by weather.  Mission 71B/C, consisting of two aircraft flew 27 sorties, 8.5 flight hours, carrying 36 troops/passengers and 14.0 tons of cargo in support of Operation Oceola.  Enemy fire was encountered with minor damage and the aircraft continued the mission.

14 Dec 67:  HMM-364 flew 80 sorties, 30.5 flight hours, carrying 219 troops/
passengers and 31.9 tons of cargo, with seven medical evacuation missions carrying 4 emergency and 45 routine evacuees in support of III MAF, 1st and 3rd Marine Divisions, the ROK Marine Corps and MAG-16.  On mission 68A/C two aircraft flew 28 sorties, 9.5 flight hours, carrying 85 troops/passengers and 14.9 tons of cargo.  One medevac mission carried 4 emergency evacuees in support of Operation Kentucky.  On this mission the aircraft involved received fire in the zone including mortars or rockets, with no hits recorded.  Mission 68C received fire from small arms and automatic weapons with the pilot and three passengers being wounded.

15 Dec 67:  The squadron flew 112 sorties, 34.3 flight hours, carrying 343 troops/
passengers and 46.5 tons of cargo, with six medevac missions carrying 32 routine evacuees in support of III MAF, 1st and 3rd Marine Divisions and the ROK Marine Corps.  On mission 58D, two aircraft flew 32 sorties, 10.7 flight hours, carrying 56 troops, 16.3 tons of cargo, four medevac missions carried 31 routine evacuees in support of 3rdMarDiv.  Enemy fire was encountered twice this date with no damage.  In support of the 1stMarDiv and the ROK Marine Corps, three aircraft flew 64 sorties, 15.0 flight hours, carrying 230 troops/passengers, 20.1 tons of cargo and one recon extraction.  In support of 3rdMarDiv, one aircraft flew 17 sorties, 2.7 flight hours, carrying 51 troops/passengers and 10.1 tons of cargo.  On mission 58E, two aircraft flew sorties involving 1.6 flight hours, carrying one routine evacuee in support of III MAF.  YK-32 received one hit with the aircraft continuing the mission.  YK-26 was parked in a revetment at Quang Tri during a mortar attack and was extensively damaged.

16 Dec 67:  HMM-364 flew 123 sorties, 37.2 flight hours, carrying 424 troops/
passengers and 30.8 tons of cargo in support of III MAF and 3rdMarDiv.  In support of the 1stMarDiv and ROK Marine Corps, four aircraft flew 57 sorties, 15.3 filght hours, carrying 123 troops/passengers and 5.7 tons of cargo.  In support of 3rdMarDiv, one aircraft flew 12 sorties, 2.3 flight hours, carrying 35 troops/
passengers and 2.2 tons of cargo.  One recon insert and two recon extractions were made with no enemy fire encountered this date.

17 Dec 67:  The squadron flew 127 sorties, 44.0 flight hours, carrying 718 troops/ passengers and 1.o ton of cargo in support of III MAF, 1st and 3rd Marine Divisions and the ROK Marine Corps, with a 24.o hour standby in support of Bald Eagle Operations.  On this date, mission 71, composed of six aircraft flew 32 sorties, 11.1 flight hours, carrying 278 troops/passemgers in support of Operation Lamson 159.  Mission 75/76, consisting of two aircraft flew 20 sorties, 6.1 flight hours, carrying 112 troops/passengers and 1.0 ton of cargo in support of Operation Citrus.  Enemy fire was received with no hits reported and no fire returned.  In support of III MAF and the ROK Marine Corps, four aircraft flew 87 sorties, 21.2 flight hours, carrying 318 troops/passengers and 5.3 tons of cargo.

18 Dec 67:  HMM-364 flew 80 sorties, 27.4 flight hours, carrying 175 troops/
passengers and 9.6 tons of cargo in support of III MAF and 3rd MarDiv.  Mission 66, consisting of two aircraft flew 9 sorties, 3.0 flight hours, carrying 11 troops/ passengers in support of 3rd MarDiv, with enemy fire received and returned with no hits on the aircraft.  One emergency recon extraction was made with UH-1E and fixed wing support.

19 Dec 67:  This squadron flew 99 sorties, 65.0 flight hours, carrying 277 troops/ passengers and 33.6 tons of cargo in support of III MAF, 3rdMarDiv.  Missions 63, 69 and 70D, E, F and G, consisting of two squadron aircraft flew 33 sorties, 11.4 flight hours, carrying 101 troops/passengers and 14.0 tons of cargo.  Three recon insertions were made by these aircraft, and two extractions, with no enemy fire being recorded.  In addition, one CH-46D from HMM-364 flew 19 sorties, 4.4 flight hours, carrying 28 troops/passengers and 8.3 tons of cargo.  Mission 64/72, composed of two squadron aircraft, flew 32 sorties, 9.6 flight hours, carrying 124 passengers/troops and 8.6 tons of cargo, making one recon insertion and one extraction.  No enemy fire was reported.

20 Dec 67:  HMM-364 flew 39 sorties, 15.5 flight hours, carrying 166 troops/
passengers, one dog passenger and .3 tons of cargo.  Two medevac missions carried two emergency and one routine evacuees in support of III MAF and 3rdMarDiv.  On mission 62B, two squadron aircraft flew four sorties, 3.6 flight hours, carrying seven troops/passengers, one dog and two emergency medevacs, with an emergency Sparrow Hawk extraction of "Sandbox" at coordinates YD526233.  Enemy fire was received during the extraction and fire was returned.  No hits were reported.  Missions 23/24/18 consisted of one aircraft, flew 26 sorties, 6.8 flight hours, carrying 153 troops/passengers in support of Operation CITRUS.  Enemy fire was received on five occasions with no hits reported.

21 Dec 67:  Squadron aircraft flew 65 sorties, 30.5 flight hours, carrying 150 troops and 3.8 tons of cargo.  One medevac mission carried one routine evacuee in support of II MAF and 3rdMarDiv.  On mission 63C, two aircraft flew 14 sorties, 3.4 flight hours, carrying 25 troops/passengers and made four recon overflies of the following areas: YD7409, YD7709, YD8301 and YD7014.  Upon completion of the recon overflies, four sorties were flown for gunner training, utilizing 600 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition.  On mission 68B, two aircraft flew 10 sorties, 3.5 flight hours, carrying 32 troops and .3 tons of cargo.  One medevac mission carried one routine evacuee.  In support of 1stMarDiv, this squadron flew 34 sorties, 7.5 flight hours, carrying 70 troops/passengers and 1.0 tons of cargo.

22 Dec 67:  HMM-364 flew 69 sorties, 28.3 flight hours, carrying 207 troops/
passengers and 11.8 tons of cargo in support of 3rdMarDiv.  Three medevac missions carried 15 priority evacuees in support of 3rdMarDiv and ROK Marines.  Mission 15, consisting of two aircraft flew 21 sorties, 11.8 flight hours, carrying 117 troops/passengers and 1.5 tons of cargo in support of Operation CHECKER.  No enemy fire was reported.  Mission 63 composed of two aircraft flew 15 sorties, 7.0 flight hours, carrying 17 troops/passengers and making one emergency extraction.  Enemy fire was received with YK-10 receiving one hit and returning fire of 500 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition.  One medevac mission carried one emergency evacuee.  Mission 18, consisting of two aircraft flew 2 sorties, 2.9 flight hours, carrying 50 troops/passengers and .4 tons of cargo in support of 1stMarDiv. Enemy fire was received with one hit reported.  Mission 64, consisting of ne aircraft flew 3 sorties, .3 flight hours, carrying 5 troops/passengers.  One medevac mission carried two emergency evacuees while making an emergency recon extraction at XD762411.  Enemy fire was received with no hits recorded.

23 Dec 67:  This squadron flew 101 sorties, 23.0 flight hours, carrying 135 troops and 15.1 tons of cargo, with one medevac mission carrying one emergency evacuee in support of 3rdMarDiv.  In support of III MAF, HMM-364 flew 7 sorties, 3.8 flight hours, carrying 27 troops, 1.7 tons of cargo.  Three recon extractions and one insertion were made in support of 3rdMarDiv.  Mission 64, composed of two aircraft flew 50 sorties, 10.2 flight hours, carrying 79 troops/passengers and 12.6 tons of cargo.  Two medevac missions carried one emergency and two routine evacuees, making one emergency extraction at XD755415.  Enemy fire was received  with no hits reported.

24 Dec 67:  HMM-364 flew 16 sorties, 5.6 flight hours, carrying 29 troops/
passengers in support of 3rdMarDiv.  Mission 64, consisting of two aircraft flew nine sorties, 2.4 flight hours, carrying 24 troops/passengers, making one emergency recon extraction at XD712415, and another extraction at XD847327.  Enemy fire was received and fire was returned with no hits reported.

25 Dec 67:  The squadron flew 50 sorties and 16.5 flight hours, carrying 123 troops/
passengers, and 9.0 tons of cargo in support of 3rdMarDiv.  On mission 63, two squadron aircraft flew two sorties, 2.0 flight hours, carrying 8 troops.  One medevac mission carried two KIAs, made one emergency recon extraction (night) at YD0964 of eight team members and two KIA pilots from Covey 156 whose plane was shot down while in support of the recon team.  No enemy fire was received.

26 Dec 67:  HMM-364 flew 49 sorties, 21.8 flight hours, carrying 61 troops/
passengers and 2.6 tons of cargo.  Two medevac missions carried 23 routine evacuees in support of 3rdMarDiv and III MAF,  Missions 79/63/73, consisting of two aircraft flew 16 sorties, 4.6 flight hours, carrying 20 troops/passengers and two medevac missions carried 10 routine evacuees and made two recon overflies.  No enemy fire was received.  Two aircraft flew 51 sorties, 3.2 flight hours, carrying 102 troops and 6.6 tons of cargo in support of 3rdMarDiv.

27 Dec 67:  The squadron flew 38 sorties, 13.6 flight hours, carrying 91 troops and 1.1 tons of cargo in support of III MA and 3rdMarDiv.  On mission 64, two aircraft flew 12 sorties, 2.6 hours, carrying 27 troops in support of 3rdMarDiv and made one recon extraction at YD848086.

28 Dec 67:  HMM-364 flew 91 sorties, 25.3 flight hours, carrying 291 troops/
passengers and 16.0 tons of cargo.  Ten medevac missions carried 9 emergency and one routine evacuees in support of 3rdMarDiv.  On mission 72, two aircraft flew 45 sorties, 12.4 flight hours, carrying 187 troops/passengers and 3.8 tons of cargo.  One medevac mission carried one emergency evacuee in support of 3rdMarDiv.

29 Dec 67:  The squadron flew one sortie, 0.5 flight hours in support of 3rdMarDiv.  Missions 71 and 75 were canceled due to averse weather.

30 Dec 67:  HMM-364 flew 14 sorties, 6.4 flight hours, carrying 6 troops and 0.8 tons of cargo.  Three medevac missions carried five emergency evacuees in support of 3rdMarDiv.  Missions 55A & B, composed of two aircraft flew 6 sorties, 2.8 flight hours, carrying one corpsman on two medevac missions which carried three emergency evacuees.  Enemy fire was received at YD515435 with both aircraft being hit.  YK-30 sustained four hits and YK-12 received 12 hits.  Fire was returned.

31 Dec 67:  The squadron flew 13 sorties, 7.2 flight hours, carrying 33 troops/
passengers and 5.7 tons of cargo in support of III MAF.

During the period 210001H to 302400H four aircraft, operating from Marble Mountain Air Facility, in support of 1stMarDiv, III MAF, United States Air Force, the ROK Marine Corps and Operation AUBURN flew 345 sorties, 77.9 flight hours, carrying 1,499 troops, 19.3 tons of cargo.  Three medevac missions carried 17 emergency evacuees and two Viet Cong prisoners.
